Our Vision: (The Future and Today)

Future: A future society, one that has harnessed the true potential of its technology, would use that technology to benefit its society. Education is fundamental to any society. Education is necessary for self governance, as in a free democratic society, and education is necessary for personal advancement. Technology must be used creatively by any caring society to educate its members, for both their benefit and their society’s benefit. It is a fundamental truth. Any software program that interacts with normally developing human beings presents the opportunity to impart useful educational information. An enlightened society could, and probably should, provide a teaching function within its interactive software. Not merely games, but all programs that interact significantly with the public could by design also toggle into a teaching mode and impart a factoid of information or a pearl of wisdom, when deemed appropriate.

Today: Our present day technology has not reached the level where a full fledged interactive teaching mode can be seamlessly added to all our significant programming. However, our technology is fully capable of blending considerable amounts of educational information into any program we chose to so endow. Given the capacity to inject subtle educational content into our programming, where is the logical place to begin? Artificial Wisdom subscribes to the view that the logical and caring place to begin is with programming that interacts with young information hungry minds. And what programming most appeals to hungry young minds? Electronic games, of course!

Ergo: We should blend educational content into electronic games. Why bother? As game players, parents and caring members of society, we want it! Make the numerous hours that we, our friends and our children play electronic games more meaningful by blending in content that is beneficial and of lasting value. Too many people consider time spent with electronic games to be wasted. Are they right? We can certainly change their view, both as a perception and in reality by blending in educational content. Who pays for it? Actually, the added cost is negligible.  Designers merely need to consider educational content to be one more source of material for their creations.  We need only ask designers to add a splash of accurate educational content somewhere in their designs, then stand back and let them do their job. It’s already being done to a limited extent. Designers who must name characters have already used names from history or literature. Designers have put fine art on walls in their games. Designers have accurately used elements from the periodic table and their abbreviations. Many historical strategy games are loaded with educational content. It’s intelligent, it’s inexpensive, and it benefits all game players.  Considering that parents repeatedly tell us they are looking for a game that has "something more" for their children,  we also know that it sells! At G.R.A.D.E.™ we like nothing more than to award a big A+ to a game.  When we do, the future becomes today.
